Oregon City is the city of firsts...
The first incorporated city west of the Rocky Mountains.
The first commercial newspaper printed west of the Mississippi.
The first mint established in the Oregon Territory.
And behind all of these firsts, and many more, were the people who left their homes in the East and abroad to make their homes in the Oregon Territory.
Oregon City was a bustling commercial and industrial center from its earliest days. A society of professionals, business owners, mill owners, those providing hospitality in their hotels and restaurants and the workers who made the goods for local use and export grew up along with the city. They built their houses and businesses, many of which are still standing today.
You can "meet" these early residents by touring their historic neighborhoods and learning more about the people buried in Mountain View Cemetery, the oldest municipal cemetery in Oregon.
